Applying pediatric guidelines for lipid levels—as opposed to adult guidelines—could result more than 400,000 additional adolescents and young adults receiving statins, according to a study. Researchers extrapolated findings to the U.S. population of patients aged 17 to 21 and found that 483,500 would be eligible for treatment of LDL-cholesterol levels if pediatric guidelines were applied. If adult guidelines were applied, only 78,200 of these younger patients would be eligible for statins.
